Deep Freeze '03: Science ops around Mac Town

15 Dec 2003 - ?

Some of the science ops we assisted the NSF with include catching, weighing, and tagging penguins and seals. Two of the penguin species we dealt with were Adelie and Emperor. The two types of seals down here are Weddell and Leapord seals. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of Leapord seals or Emperor penguins. Hopefully soon I can get some photos of the Killer Whales that stalk the ice edge!

An Adelie Penguin rookery on Beaufort Island. The only thing that they have to build their nests with are the volcanic rocks laying all over.

The all gray penguins are the chicks which haven't developed their adult feathers yet. The scientists in the background are weighing and tagging the penguins.

A close up shot of an Adelie.

Another picture of the rookery.

This one just wants a ride.

The 6543 and 6555 (or the triple nickel as we call it) on the ice at the Beaufort Island penguin rookery.

Icicles on White Island.

Weddell seal on White Island.

This one and the next are of a Weddell seal pup.

A scientist gets up close and personal with a Weddell.

That's AVT2 Bill Miller showing the relative size of a Weddell. He took all of these seal pictures...except this one.

The triple nickel with Erebus in the background.
